Do Your Kids habla Espananol? This Author Says They Should Start in Elementary School New Spanish-English children's books encourage bilingual learning
Kissimmee, FL, 2008 As of July 2006, the U.S. Census Bereau estimated there are 44.3 million Hispanics living in the United States, being the largest ethnic or race minority. By 2050 the Hispanic population is projected to reach 102,6 million. With such a large percentage of the country's population immigrating from Spanish-speaking countries, it comes as no surprise that nearly one in five people living in the U.S. speaks a language at home other than English. Never before has bilingual education been so important, and parents and educators are taking action to break down the language barrier. One such man is William (Bill) Adams, a great grandfather and author whose innovative series of bilingual children's books can be read in English and Spanish with just a 'flip' of the book. Written for children ages 3 to 8, Adams' books follow the adventures of twins 'Mandy and Andy' in humorous verse translated into two languages. Featuring original illustrations from well-known cartoonist Tom Stiglich. The second (and future) books in the Mandy and Andy series contain a glossary/glosario as an educational aid. "There's been a big push for kids to learn Spanish AND English Adams says. "It's much easier for young ones to pick up a second language than it is for adults. Through my books, I hope to provide parents, grandparents and teachers a fun, educational tool that encourages kids to embrace a new language." The first book "Hate That Thunder/odio Ese Trueno" has Mandy confronting her fear of thunder. The second book in the Mandy and Andy series is "Goin' To The Zoo/Vamos Al Zoologico", which follows the adorable twins during a fun visit to the Zoo. The innovative idea with this children's book series is that you read one language in one direction, then 'flip' the book over to read in the other language. A Glossary/Glosario is included in the second and all future books. A teacher from central Florida says "...we work with the vocabulary and alphabetical order by using the Glossary/Glosario. We also worked with rhyming words, sequence and students completed a perfect story map." Another teacher from Pennsylvania said "...these books are a great example of Bilingual books.....the kids were so entertained in the way the books changed over to Spanish." Mandy and Andy Books are headquarterd in Kissimmee, Florida and have just released their third book "Visiting The Farm/Vistano la Granja".
